A message from Kyle Risch, EHS Band Director:
This Thursday (3/28) the EHS Wind Ensemble will be heading to Radnor High School to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 12 Assessment. This is a festival style competition where we will be adjudicated by a panel of the best collegiate band directors in the area.
March is “Music in our Schools Month” and it has been an exciting one in the music wing. Among a number of concert performances, we have had guest clinicians from WCU, University of Miami (Florida), and members of the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors in to offer our students great lessons. This performance at the PMEA Assessment culminates our exciting month and should result in an outstanding performance, in a beautiful auditorium, for a rather large crowd of all the bands on before us.
Thank you for your support of the music program and the arts!

east hs now has its own weather station
2/20/19
Wondering what the weather is on the EHS campus? We have installed a professional weather station on our roof. This weather station delivers at least 20 different weather data points over the Internet; from the usual temperate, humidity, barometric pressure to the more unusual, UV index, solar radiation, and air quality, along with 7 and 10 day forecasts. If you want to see the station, go behind EHS on the Fugett side of the tennis courts and look toward the roof over the loading dock. It was purchased through the generosity of the PTO mini-grant program.
You can monitor our weather station by downloading the "Weatherlink Davis" app and the "Weather Underground" app. Just follow the directions (for Weatherlink Davis = EASTHS, West Chester, PA; for Weather Underground = Brinton Woods, West Chester East HS). To monitor it on-line go to www.weatherlink.com, use EASTHS, West Chester, PA.

deca's pitch like a pro contest
6/13/18
East DECA’s Marketing Honors class worked with Baked Cookies and Dough in West Chester on our 3rd annual Pitch Like a Pro contest. The past two years classes have created advertising plans for Waffatopia and Bates Motel Escape Room, respectively. The students were tasked with creating a pitch for Baked’s grand opening of their second location. The requirements included researching target markets, connecting features and benefits, creating a budget and developing a timeline for the promotions. The winning pitch was chosen by Max Berry, owner of Baked, who was thoroughly impressed with the products the students submitted. The winning team was (from left) Caroline Stryker, Helena Purcell, Maddie Keljikian and Valentina Lopez! They won breakfast from Panera and gift cards to Baked.

nHS Supports Friends Association Family Shelter Program
6/7/18
Last week our graduating class of NHS students provided a gift of $750 to the Friend Association for the Care and Protection of Children, a local non-profit organization that provides shelter to homeless families and support services for families who are emerging from being homeless. Shown in the photo is Ms. Robin Meixner, Development Director for Friends, receiving the donation from Carley Castura, 1st Vice President, and Alex Carr, President of the NHS Class of 2018. In receiving the gift Ms. Meixner noted that these funds would be able to support a family of 3 in a temporary living environment for up to two weeks, time to help find more permanent living accommodations and keep the family off the streets in the meantime.
In speaking to the NHS Class of 2019, Ms. Meixner explained how children living in homelessness often will be forced to move from school to school, sometimes several times in a year. Honor students, learning of the plight families in our area face, were very moved by the impact such uncertainty can have on the ability of parents to support the education of their children.
For the coming school year, the East High School NHS is preparing to enter into a partnership with Friends Association to provide tutoring and mentoring services to the children of families living in the Friends’ shelter. Several students from East’s NHS have already volunteered to meet once or twice a week with children staying in the Friend’s shelter to go over school work and help students with their homework. Working in this way with families, staying up to 3 months in the shelter, these students also hope to foster a mentoring relationship that can help guide children through the struggles they face in their own lives, beyond keeping up with their education.

Varsity and jv Academic Teams compete in semi-final matches
2/27/18 (updated 3/2/18)
The Varsity Academic Team competed at the CCIU Building in the CCIU League Semi-Final matches on Monday, February 26th. They went into the day seeded #7 (out of the 24 teams).
They took on Rustin and Renaissance Charter in the first round and won the match!
EHS 125
Rustin 75
Ren Charter 75
That win allowed them to compete in the afternoon round; a win would have put them into the finals. Although the team played well, they were defeated by Unionville and Great Valley.
It's been a great season for the team; for them this was their last competition in the CCIU League. Most of the varsity team have been competing since their freshmen year at EHS. They worked hard and represented EHS well for these past four years.
The JV Academic team competed on Thursday, March 1st. They defeated Malvern Prep and Coatesville in the first round; the 2:30 semifinal match went down to the last two questions. The team played an exciting game, battling back from a 15 point deficit to take the lead, however Devon Prep went on to win by 10 points. Congratulations to both teams on a successful year.

This year’s special guest was Thom Sechrist, former Superintendent of the Downingtown School District. It was his vision to have a countywide event such as this and he was honored for that vision.

Twelfth-grader Ben Grossman was invited to participate in the world's largest humanitarian dental project, Great Shape! Jamaica, through which he assisted dentists in delivering care to underserved populations in rural Jamaica. Upon his return from this weeklong project on November 11th, Ben shared his amazing experience:
"Over the course of the week, my group and I were assigned to set up a functioning dental clinic in a one-room schoolhouse with a tin roof, hardly any electricity, and very little running water, let alone clean, drinkable water. Despite sporadic electrical malfunctions and other inconveniences, we worked well with the few resources and tools we had, putting together an efficient operation, serving over 40 patients a day. My eyes were open to life in a developing country. I had the opportunity to treat people with extensive dental needs, who otherwise would have had no access to care. Some of the people were immensely grateful, while others were quietly stunned because they had never received dental care in their lives and had no idea of what to expect. The experience of treating these people not only showed me just how fortunate I am, but also sparked a passion for dentistry. This trip taught me to love doing work that I am passionate about and to use my skills to help others in need. Regardless of which career path I pursue, serving others will be at the core of what I do."

East students visited the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American history and culture in Washington DC. The museum covers more than 600 years of history in one building incorporating lighting, sound, and video throughout. With the time allotted the students explored the top 3 floors which honor African-Americans in the arts, music, theater, and community. Hopefully we can plan a second trip in the spring to see the rest of the museum.

A hilarious and timely satire on the contemporary political scene. The play dates are Thursday, November 10th; Friday, November 11th; and Saturday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.
