In 2017, suicide became the second leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 10 and 35 across the United States. Pennsylvania alone has seen a rise in suicide among young people over the last few years. This training will help attendees become “Gatekeepers” who can recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone might be contemplating suicide. By following the simple steps of QPR, they can get others help and provide hope. Participants need no additional clinical training or education.

The West Chester Education Foundation (WCAEF) was started by our superintendent, Dr. Jim Scanlon, to help offset the costs of providing creative, meaningful, real-world experiences for students in the West Chester Area School District. The Foundation has been able to fund thousands of dollars in mini grants to WCASD teachers and student organizations that match its mission, and they have provided scholarships of approximately $500 each to hundreds of students to attend a week long, business intensive summer program at Lycoming College. Primarily WCAEF has been able to procure state tax credits from corporations as its main source of income. With the state budget shortfalls, they saw the need to host this fundraising event.

Show your support for East High School and WCASD
Let everyone know that you are happy with East High School and WCASD by leaving your feedback on these websites:
http://www.greatschools.org/pennsylvania/
https://niche.com/
These sites are marketing tools that almost all realtors use in giving potential home buyers school information. Many people shopping for a home visit these sites and compare us not only to Henderson and Rustin, but to other high schools in the area. These sites are not totally accurate, and for schools such as East, the information is outdated. We need to give our feedback about East and WCASD on these sites so that the information is more up to date and portrays East High School as the wonderful school we are today. Please take the time to do this and ask fellow East parents to do this as well.
You may have seen the letter from Superintendent, Dr. Jim Scanlon, on the front page of the District website. Please click on the link to learn more about the serious funding issue facing the district. He asks that we contact our legislators about this issue. Here is a link to this important information.
http://home.wcasd.net/pages/West_Chester_Area_SD/School_Board/Legislative
I sent my emails this weekend and plan on calling this week. I ask all of you to contact the list of state senators and express your opposition to this bill.
Please support Post Prom
Seniors and senior parents, do you know where your raffle tickets are? If they are at the bottom of a backpack, find them and sell them to family, friends and neighbors – especially those families with underclassmen. This is the main way support is raised for the East Post Prom. You can win $500!! And enjoy an exciting and fun post prom party in May!
Please always feel free to email the PTO at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Welcome Back and PTO Update
9/22/16
It has been a productive few weeks for our PTO! Thank you for your support!
Membership
There is still time to input your directory information and make a donation to the PTO. And if you are able, please donate to our “Make a Difference Dollars” fund as well. You can do this on www.wc-eastpto.org. We need your support in order to continue to support the school through our Mini Grants, Viking Pride and other programs. Please consider joining and supporting your PTO’s valuable efforts on behalf of your children. You will receive a printed copy of the directory with your $20 contribution
Hospitality: our committee has already organized two events: lunch to thank the custodial staff and dinner for the teachers for back to school night. The committee organized parent volunteers to provide dinner for teachers the night of Open House. The teachers have a particularly long day that day and they very much appreciated the beautiful spread the parents provided and the chance to share a meal.
SAT and ACT Prep Classes
Our first SAT Prep class is full and currently underway. There is still room in the November class, but it is filling up quickly. Thank you to the hard work of the SAT chairs to advertise our program, and to keep it running throughout the year. Thanks also to the dedicated East teachers who teach the course. The word is spreading about these classes, so sign-up now to reserve your spot for the November, January and March classes! www.wc-eastpto.org

PTO Mini Grant Program a Success Once Again!
4/13/16
Each year the WC East HS PTO sponsors a mini grant program. Staff submit applications for items or activities that will enhance the learning environment for students but which are not covered by the school district budget. An evening is set aside for staff to present their ideas to a panel of PTO members, and the panel then decides on the merits of each mini grant application. Funding for the mini grants comes from your Make-a-Difference Dollar donations and Mini Grant Community Giving donations.
This year the PTO was happy to be able to fund the following mini grants:
Thank you for your support of this program and the vibrant learning community that is East High School!

PTO Update 9/21/15
It has been a productive few weeks for our PTO!
- SAT: our SAT class started last week, and our numbers are at an all time high! This is due to the hard work of our SAT chair to advertise our program, to the ease of use of our sign-up site and most importantly to the great staff that teach the course! The word is spreading about these classes, so sign-up now and reserve your spot for future classes! www.wc-eastpto.org
- Hospitality: our committee organized two very successful events already to thank the custodial staff and all teachers on behalf of our community. A luncheon was provided to the custodial staff the first week of school. The committee also organized parent volunteers to provide a wonderful dinner spread for teachers the night of Open House. As you can imagine the teachers have a particularly long day that day and they very much appreciated the beautiful spread the parents provided. (If you would like to be part of the sign-up that solicits such donations from parents please log onto our PTO sign-up site. www.wc-eastpto.org)
- College Prep Speaker: Every two years the three district high school PTOs sponsor a speaker to present to the WCASD community on the college preparation journey. This year it is our turn to host. We will be bringing back Lisa Bleich, author of Surviving the College Application Process: Case Studies to Help You Find Your Unique Angle for Success. Mark your calendars for her presentation on October 20 at 7pm in our auditorium.
- Membership: we have been tracking our member numbers closely and tweeking the sign-up site to make it as simple as possible to join. Unfortunately, our membership numbers continue to be low. Right now we have 250 families that have joined our PTO. We are so grateful for those members, but we do have over 1000 families in our school. Please consider joining and supporting your PTO’s valuable efforts on behalf of your children.
Sporting Events Safety: We would like to especially thank Dr. Fagan and our school’s administrators for working hard and putting in extra time to vigilantly keep our sporting events a safe and fun environment. In support of these efforts, please be particularly aware and informed of where your children are before attending a WC East night event and that they arrive in a safe state.
College Thoughts: I heard this podcast, “Will College Pay Off,” that I thought would be helpful to you as we all are considering college choices for our children. It is an interview with Peter Cappelli, a professor at Wharton, where he warns and explains “be careful – college won’t always pay off.” Here is the link:

Welcome to the New School Year!
9/1/15
Your PTO has been working throughout the summer to ensure that the great programs we sponsor to enhance our school continue to flourish. We have been recognized as one of the most active and productive PTOs in our area – a statement of which, as you can imagine, we are most proud. We are equally proud of the fact that our success does not rely heavily on inordinate volunteer hours. In fact – getting parents to volunteer for the few opportunities that arise has always been easy. Our parents are very generous with their time!
What we do really need is for your family to join the PTO.
www.wc-eastpto.org
We do not fundraise and the reasonable $20 dues allows us to continue running the worthwhile programs on which our school has come to rely. If you can as well please contribute to our Make A Difference Dollars Fund (MADD) helps us even more.
As the year starts I have two helpful tips to offer you:
1.) Consider adding the “PowerSchool” app to your mobile device and have your student add it to his/hers as well. Teaching your student to stay on top of grades daily and/or weekly as well as giving you the ability to do so is great way to help your child succeed. Our teachers are terrifically responsive. If assignments are missing or grades do not meet expectations, ask your child first about the situation. If there is still confusion after your child has reached out to the teacher then you should reach out to the teacher for clarification.
2.) Coinciding with teacher communication – it is imperative that reach out to teachers with concerns. However, it is just as important to reach out to teachers with thanks. We all know their jobs are very demanding; and I know from my experience I am quick to reach out to a teacher if I have a problem but not as quick to reach out if all is going well in a class and my child loves her teacher. Shame on me! I continue to try to remedy this by remembering to send teachers thank yous – making it more powerful by including Dr. Fagan on the note. Please consider doing this.
Finally - your PTO is a great resource if you have any questions on any aspect of the school. We are made up of veteran parents who would love to help you navigate through any challenges that may come up. Feel free to email us at any time: [email protected]
We wish you the best of luck for this school year!
