Corey Celenza (12) and Andrew DiBernardo (12) each won a match at the PIAA state tournament, but fell short of earning a top eight medal.
To put their careers in perspective, they were both 2X State Qualifiers, 3X Southeast Regional Place finishers, and 3X District One and State All-Academic. Andrew was also honored by the officials before the regional final and awarded a scholar athlete scholarship.

swimming success at districts
3/4/19
This past weekend was awesome for Viking swimmers. Senior Girl Captain Emily Hahn capped off her career with 2 solid swims and will truly be missed for her leadership and spirit. The boys had the most successful District meet in the last 25 years including two top 8 finishes individually (JP Perucki- 5th in the 100 Breast; 7th in the 100 Fly), 1 top 8 relay (AJ Avagliano, Phil Leander, Matt Sivo, and JP Perucki) and 4 school records (2 relays, JP in the breaststroke and AJ in the 100 freestyle). East will qualify a boys relay to the state meet for the first time in decades. This brings our total school records for the year to 7 (all 3 relays, 100 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Fly and Diving), which equates to over half of the events in a swim/dive meet. The following students will be traveling to Bucknell next Thursday to compete at States:
AJ Avagliano (200 Free relay, 400 free relay, 50 freestyle)
Phil Leander (200 free relay, 400 free relay)
Kyle Puchalla (Relay Alternate)
JP Perucki (200 free relay, 400 free relay, 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly)
Jon Sherlock (Relay Alternate)

September 12th was an eventful day on the golf course for the East team. First, East defeated Downingtown East by a score of 185-195, the lowest team score East has posted in nearly a decade. More remarkable was Sofia Amoroso’s hole-in-one! It was on the 8th hole at Honeybrook, a 148 yard par 3. Pictured is Sofia immediately after she grabbed her ball on the 8th green. Additionally, Jack Hamilton shot a 1 under 34 on 9 holes, the lowest score for a single match in nearly a decade.

BOYS TENNIS
Last Season - With a heavily senior loaded roster, the boys finished last season with a 12-5 record and their first Team District appearance since 2008. Justin Aksu and Will Delaney won Ches-Mont Doubles Championship.

SOFTBALL
The West Chester East Softball team is currently five games into their season and off to a 4-1 start. The Vikings are a very young team with replacing seven of their starters last year due to graduation. The team has been preparing this off season with lifting and conditioning since November and practices since January. The varsity roster is currently made up of two seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and one freshman. They have a lot of underclassmen who are stepping up and playing varsity for their first time this year and doing a great job. They look to continue to improve each game and come together as one unit.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Girls lacrosse, under the leadership of new head coach Greg Murray, is off to a good start and improving every day at all three levels. The Varsity squad is benefitting from the excellent leadership of its 10 seniors, including captains Cammi Luidens, Corryne Sulpizio, and Sarah Reilly. The team’s offense is dynamic, with seven different scorers notching points through the first five games. Emerging as standouts are Cammi Luidens, Morgan Catrambone, and Maddie Smiley. Alexandra Heard is also stellar two-way player. The defense is anchored by seniors Catherine Barton, Jenna Phillips, Catherine Pickard, and Corryne Sulpizio. Sarah Reilly is working hard to bounce back from an early season injury while third year starter in goal Sophia Francisco has played outstanding, including a 20 save win over Upper Dublin.
Additional key support players consist of Julia Nagel, Haley Seybert, Saundra Godshall, Gianna Grello, and Katie Walton. Come out and support the girls as they work hard to reach their goals of entering the post-season.
BOYS LACROSSE
The boys are 3 wins and 2 losses and 2-0 in the league.
Standing out on offense are Jacob Greiner, Joseph Corroza and Matt Dunkel. Defense is being led by JD Carroll, Matt Erfle, Collin Murray, Devin Gilligan and Mike Gray. Joe Sivo is dominating at the face off x.
The team has had a solid start to the 2017 season. They play fast and unselfishly and can score a lot of goals in short time. Jacob Greiner has been a true playmaker on offense and our legion of doom line of defense has been hard to overcome. We head into arguably the toughest week of our season with Henderson, Lower Merion and Bullis Academy (Washington DC). We look to compete against a very strong Henderson program for a key league matchup. The day before Easter is our annual game at Under Armour in The Inner Harbour of Baltimore against Bullis, currently ranked 4th in the country. We treat this game as college game day. The boys all dress in coat and tie, we travel on charter bus and do a meal together after the game. It a great experience and great day regardless of the outcome of the game.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
The Boys Track and Field has started the season off strong and is being led by a handful of veteran athletes that include: Will Pizii, Evan Tyler, Nick Kokat, Dan Brennan, Jared Cooper and Matt Clarke. The team squad opened their invitational season off at the Upper Darby Relays and won with a school record setting performance in the 4x200 relay (Cooper, Kokat, McMahon and Kushner and javelin (Pizii and White) relay. Other medal winners include the 3rd place High Jump (Hocker/Kushner), 4x1600 relay (Clarke, Siwarski, D. Brennan and Lewin), Joe Delaney in Novice 1600 and a 4th place finish by the 4x400 relay (Kokat, Cooper, Daley and Ranson). They opened their ChesMont league schedule with a win at Avon Grove and were led by triple winner Jared Cooper (100,200 4x400) and double winners Tom Silva (Shot Put/Discus) and Charlie Webb (110H ad 300H). They continue their season April 8th at the Perkiomen Valley Invite.
BASEBALL
The Varsity baseball team is off to a 3-2 start. Junior Adam Smith is dominating on the mound, winning both of his starts. In 15 innings pitched, he's surrendered 1 earned run, struck out 17, and walked no one. Leading hitters, with 5 apiece, are senior first baseman Chris Edwards, senior catcher JT Thompson, and junior second baseman Tim Becker. Freshman John Wileczek has stepped into the starting role in center field and impressed with a spectacular diving catch in the gap to rob an extra-base hit during the Rustin game last Tuesday. East baseball has their annual beef and beverage fundraiser hosted by the booster club 7:00pm Saturday night at Barnaby's in WC. Tix can be bought at the door.
BOYS TENNIS
Last Season - With a heavily senior loaded roster, the boys finished last season with a 12-5 record and their first Team District appearance since 2008. Justin Aksu and Will Delaney won Ches-Mont Doubles Championship.
2017 Season Outlook - After graduating seven of the eleven Varsity starters from last season, East picked up three freshmen newcomers (Luke Lagalante, Johnny Gluchowski, and Kunal Maheshawari) playing their first year of Varsity tennis. The team is led by Justin Aksu (Senior) at 1st Singles with fellow returning Varsity players Ryan Brunner (Junior), Alex Carr (Junior), and Rohit Krishnagopal (Junior). The rest of the lineup consists of four returning players making their Varsity debut, Akash Manoj (Sophomore), Jamie Peters (Senior), Ben Anderson (Senior), and Marko Neskovic (Junior).
The Vikings are currently at 5-2 so far this season and look to continue where they left off last season pushing for another appearance in Team Districts.
Results
@Bishop Shanahan WON 4-3
vs Downingtown West LOSS 4-3
@Henderson WON 5-2
vs Sun Valley WON 7-0
vs Kennett WON 4-3
@Rustin LOSS 6-1

In preparation for this year the Vikings hired two new coaches and moved a few players around. The team looks to continue to be competitive within their league and as well as at the district and state levels. The East Softball team has 15 regular season games left and seven home games.

Wrestling
The WC East Wrestling Team is building off our 2016 success with a tremendous start to 2017. On 1/4, East knocked off Downingtown East 41-33 in a dual, ending D East's 26 match Ches-Mont win streak. This came after a championship performance at our own tournament, the Colley Classic, and a strong showing at the Wetzel Classic at Hatboro Horsham, where East placed 6th out of 31 teams. The Vikings are home the next two Wednesday night for 7:00 pm duals. Wednesday 1/11 vs. Coatesville will be Teacher Appreciation Night, and the following Wednesday 1/18 we will wrestle Henderson and honor our lone senior, Mike Manieri. Best of luck to Viking Wrestling as we continue the grind of the season!

Wrestling
West Chester East Wrestling is young, but still talented. We lost 8 seniors from our team last year that finished 3rd in District One Central and was the 13th ranked overall dual meet team in all of Southeast PA. However, great expectations are the norm for the Vikings. Led by lone senior Mike Manieri, as well as juniors Tyler Blum, Alek Getman, Tommy Luke, Joe Timm, and Campbell Wolov, the Vikings look to defend their Colley Classic @ WC East title December 17th. Look out for sophomore Andrew DiBernardo. Andrew finished just one match short of the PIAA Championships last year as a freshman, placing 6th in the SE Region.
Boys Basketball
Coming of an 11-11 season and narrowly missing the District playoffs, the Vikings return only 3 varsity players. However, the team is optimistic about their ability for success this season. The Vikings open up at home against Interboro at 7pm on December 13th. Come and support!
Girls Basketball
The Girls Basketball team will be much improved this season and expects to be competitive in every game. The team includes a mix of experienced veterans and determined underclassman ready to contribute. The team is led by seniors Kaitlyn Boyle, Cindy Clark, Caroline Lewis, Jenna Phillips, and Maddie Rogers. Juniors Julia Dakin, Lexy Hartman, Kayla Yoegel, and Tara Wahn & Sophomores Marissa McDonald and Mackenzie Richardson are poised to make an impact this season. This season’s theme is: “WHATEVER IT TAKES”

BOYS’ SOCCER
The past two weeks the boys’ soccer team has come together and are starting to play like a team on a mission. The boys tied a very strong Downingtown West team and have beaten Oxford and Sun Valley. This had brought the boys standings up to 3-5-2 for the year with 8 games to go. Senior Jake Bonnett has scored 5 goals in the last two games and Sophomore Ben Delaney has scored two goals. East defensive center mid and newcomer to America Cormac Dooley has really started to show how strong of a player he is. He has controlled our mid field and has dominated the defensive box clearing balls coming into the box.
The boys are looking at six games in the next 14 days. These six games will be a test for the boys if they want to make the playoffs a reality this year. They play Rustin, Great Valley, Ridley, Downingtown East, Unionville and Conestoga.
GOLF
We had our last match of the season yesterday and were narrowly defeated by an undefeated Shanahan team. Our final record was 7-6, which shows a drastic improvement over the 3 matches we won last year. Special thanks goes to Georgia for leading the team on the course and for creating a fun team atmosphere every day. We became a close group this year and much of our success was due to her leadership abilities.
At the Ches-Mont Championships at Applecross on Tuesday, Georgia Naples won the girls Ches—Mont Championship. Four golfers qualified for Districts – Georgia, Sophia Amoroso, Cole Shew and PJ DiPiero.
We’ve been shooting lower and lower scores every day this year. I’m hoping we can post some low numbers on Tuesday and qualify more than a few players for the district championships at Gilbertsville and Turtle Creek on Monday the 11th.
FIELD HOCKEY
The East Field Hockey team recently recognized their 12 graduating seniors on September 29th in a game against Sun Valley. The Vikings won 8 to 0 in a strong performance. The team is now 6-6 overall, and looks to take on the back third of their season with games against Rustin, Great Valley, Downingtown East, Unionville, Octorara, and Avon Grove.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
The Vikings won two of in their last four matches with a tight 5-2 loss to Great Valley followed by routine wins over Coatesville and Avon Grove, respectively, and a 6-1 loss over Downingtown East last week. Currently standing with a 7-4 Ches-Mont record (10-4 Overall), the girls have two league matches left on the season. The girls remain in the hunt for a wildcard spot in the Team District Championships which starts October 10th.
This past weekend was the Ches-Mont Singles Tournament held indoors at Healthplex Sports Club...Maddie Russell (Junior) made it to the 2nd round in her first appearance in the tournament before losing to the #7 seed from Henderson.
Amanda Nguyen (Junior) made a run to the quarterfinals before losing 6-3 6-3 to #4 seed from Henderson. This was Nguyen's second consecutive appearance in the final eight of the tournament.
VOLLEYBALL
East Girls Volleyball is currently 6-5, with only three weeks left in the normal season. They are currently ranked 22nd out of 45 in the district, which is the highest placement East Volleyball has seen in years. The seniors are excited at the prospect of post-season matches, and are working hard each week to assure a spot in District level play.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
With senior night fast approaching, the entire East Girls Soccer team is looking forward to a very special night. For our seniors, every game holds an opportunity to extend our soccer career. As our bond as grown basically inseparable, our chemistry has shown on the field. While the JV team has continued its great success, the Varsity team has improved by winning 3 games in a row. Beyond the pitch, our team is having more fun than ever. Between a yoga session with Mr. Murray and games of World Cup and practice, our team is having more fun than ever. Our fun has been translating to so much success on the field. We're all excited for the rest of the season and hoping for the best both on and off the field.

FIELD HOCKEY
After the conclusion of pre-season and Saturday Play Days, West Chester East took on Conestoga in their first game of the year. The lady Vikings fell to the Pioneers 7 to 2. The Field Hockey team learned from their loss and went on a three game winning streak beating Haverford, Coatesville, and Phoenixville. The ladies came out strong in a well fought battle against local rival Henderson. BOYS' SOCCER
Greetings from the East boys’ soccer team,
I hope this finds everyone well! We have had some early season ups and downs. We are currently sitting at 1-4-2 looking ahead at a stretch of 4 conference games over the course of the next 2 weeks.
This past week we played one of our crosstown rivals in Henderson and lost a tough game 1-0. The boys played some of our best soccer of the season so far. This week we just played to a 0-0 draw with Downingtown West. We are looking to carry some of that positive momentum into a home match vs Shanahan on Thursday night. We kick off at 7:00pm and as always hope to have some fan support out there.
Senior defensive midfielder Nick Kokat has been one of our top players game in and game out so far this year. He comes to every practice and game willing to do everything he can to be the best he can be. Collin Murray another senior who has been playing keeper for us has kept us in every game this year. Collin has made at least 2 to 3 saves in every game that could have got out of control if he didn’t make the saves that he has.
In closing the boys are working very hard trying to get back on a winning streak.
GIRLS' SOCCER
The EGS season is already flying by! Our JV team has had an incredible 6-1 start to the season! Their success and dominance on the field proves that the future of the team is definitely a bright one. We all hope that their amazing success continues throughout the rest of the season!
The Varsity team, while not as successful in record, has made immense improvements on the field. Every time we play a game, we look more composed and confident. Our level of play is constantly increasing. Coming off a very well played game against Downingtown West, the team looks for two Ches-Mont League victories against Shanahan and Downingtown East. As the schedule for both varsity and JV becomes more difficult, all the hard work we have put into the season thus far is really starting to pay off.
GOLF

Head Coach: Brian Busby (6th season)
Last Season’s Record: 3-9
Home Course This Year: Downingtown Country Club
Key Players: Sofia Amoroso (Sophomore). Georgia Naples (Senior Captain). Cole Shew (Sophomore)
Outlook: We have a very young team. At times this year we may have five or six starters who are either freshmen or sophomores. We will be led by our senior captain, Georgia Naples, who has improved tremendously over the past four years and has played a great deal of tournament golf over the summer. Cole Shew and Sofia Amoroso, both sophomores, are also playing a lot of tournament golf and I’m expecting great things from both of them this year and into the future. Our goal is to get better each year, and I’ll think we’ll be better this year than we were last year.
Someone to feature would be either Georgia Naples, who has worked hard to become a collegiate level golfer, or Sofia Amoroso, who will be one of the better female golfers in the area over the next three seasons.

GIRLS SOCCER
The East Girls Soccer Season has begun! With teams formed and our first scrimmages under our belt, we are all looking forward to the 2016-17 season. After a great first week of practices, all 15 of our seniors could not be more excited for regular season games to begin. Already, both our varsity and JV teams are looking super competitive. Even after just one week, I am so reminded of why I love this team so much and how much EGS really is a family!
In two weeks, we have our very first game against Penncrest. From then on, our season flies by with two or three games every week until the end of October. While it seems like such a long way away now, I know that the next two months will go by in the blink of an eye. All of the girls on the team are definitely ready to give 110% in every practice and every game to ensure that this season is one to remember!

This will set the tone for the season and be stepping stone for them to improve upon their 6th place Ches-Mont finish last year.

Make sure you get out and see a game this fall!
